Carolyn: We met at Printed Matter, NY’s oldest nonprofit dedicated to artists’ publications. I was working there and we were having a book launch for one of the many books David has published. One of the only rules about book launches was no red wine and David walked in carry a case of red wine. I thought he was so cute and was so afraid to tell him he had to return it. He then added me to his mailing list and I followed (stalked) his art career for years. Then finally after many missed chances, a few years later we started dating.
Carolyn: We were visiting David’s family in Sweden and he took me on a long ferry ride through the Archipelago to the most beautiful island called Sandhamn. I was laying on the rocks looking out at the water/closing my eyes and taking it all in, and David asked me if I wanted a Starburst (the candy!). I said no and then I opened my eyes and my mom’s/great grandmother’s engagement ring was in front of me. I turned around and he asked me to marry him while chewing his strawberry Starburst. It was perfect! And to this day the smell of strawberry candy makes me think of his proposal.
Carolyn: The wedding took place on his grandparents’ farm, Hassla in Sweden. We did it in their backyard and it was a nice small, intimate affair. Hassla has always been a special place for David ever since he was a small child. He even named his publishing press after it. We also really wanted his grandparents to be able to be there so it just made perfect sense that we do it on their farm.
Carolyn: My favorite part of the day was our first dance. I am a ballet dancer and we danced to Bill Withers, Lovely Day. It was just a ton of fun and also romantic. He has goofy moves that I adore.
Carolyn: Is there anything you can point out about your pictures that we might not have noticed?I entrusted the most amazing wedding planner who was able to figure out my vision from my babbling emails and plan the whole wedding from across the ocean. She picked just the right people for hair/makeup, photography, food. I didn’t meet anyone until we arrived and it just all felt right.
Carolyn: All of them. But I really love the one where he is feeding me cake.
Carolyn: The farm was the starting point for everything to take off and when I saw my dress on your website I just knew it was the one. It was my first dress to ever try on and I wish I could still wear it every day. I felt like a bohemian princess in it. It was perfect. So perfect that David, who said he wouldn’t cry, cried as soon as he saw it. It was a dream!
